Who we are
Ether Echo is a service operated by Infinite Ether Interactive Inc., a company established in Quebec, Canada.

What we collect, and why
| Information | Why |
|---|---|
| Email address | To identify your account and write to you when needed |
| First and last name | To call you by your first name during conversations with the tutor |
| Interface language and time zone | To show the service in your language and to set the hour your review day begins |
| Your progress: words learned, results, due dates | To schedule your reviews at the right moment. This is the heart of the service. |
| Tutor minutes used per day | To apply the daily limit |
| If you subscribe: your plan, its state, the current billing period, and the identifiers Link returns so we can recognise you from one payment to the next | To grant you what you paid for, and nothing else. Those identifiers say nothing about your means of payment. |
| On a failure: your browser type and the software version | To diagnose and fix the error |
What we do not collect
- Your voice is never recorded. During a conversation with the tutor it is transmitted, transcribed, then gone. No recording is kept.
- Your conversations with the tutor are not kept. Nothing from them is written to our database.
- No recording of your screen or your session.
- No IP address is retained by our failure-detection tool.
- No card data. Payment happens entirely at Link: your card number never passes through our servers and is never written there.
- No advertising, no advertising trackers, no sale of your information. Ever.
The voice tutor
This is the part of the service that handles the most sensitive information, and it deserves to be described precisely rather than buried in a list.
When you speak to the tutor, the sound of your voice leaves your device in real time. It is routed, transcribed into text, and that text, along with your first name and the list of words you know, is used to compose the tutor's reply, which is finally turned back into speech.
Four providers take part in that chain, all located in the United States; they are named in the table below. No recording of your voice is kept, neither by them for this service nor by us.
If you would rather your voice were not handled this way, do not use the voice tutor. The rest of the service works without it.
Who your information is shared with
We rely on providers to run the service. They are located outside Quebec and may use your information only for the task we entrust to them.
| Provider | Country | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Clerk | United States | Email, first and last name, to manage your account |
| Soniox | United States | The sound of your voice, to transcribe it |
| Anthropic | United States | Your first name and your transcribed words, to reply |
| Cartesia | United States | The text of the tutor's replies, to say them aloud |
| LiveKit | United States | The audio stream, to route it |
| Link (Stripe) | United States | Your email and your means of payment, to charge the subscription and invoice you. Link is the merchant for this sale: it is Link that holds this information, not us. |
| Apple | United States | Your means of payment and your billing email, for a subscription bought on the App Store. Apple is the merchant for this sale: it is Apple that holds this information, not us. |
| United States | The same, for a subscription bought on Google Play. | |
| RevenueCat | United States | Your account identifier with us and the state of your subscription, to tell us what you bought. |
| Sentry | European Union | An internal identifier and your browser, on a failure |
| Cloudflare, DigitalOcean | United States | Hosting and routing of the site |
DeepL (European Union) translates the service's learning content. None of your information is sent to it.
How long we keep it
Your information is kept for as long as your account exists. When you delete it, your account, your progress, your courses and your usage data are erased.
Two exceptions, which we would rather state plainly. The first: if you subscribed, Link keeps the accounting records of your payments for as long as tax law requires. Deleting your account with us does not erase an invoice at Link. No merchant may erase its own.
Now that a subscription can also be bought on a phone, the same rule applies to Apple and Google: they cannot erase an invoice before the term tax law imposes either.
The second: the anonymised log of your reviews is kept. That log measures the quality of the review algorithm across all learners. On deletion it is detached from your account and can no longer lead back to you.
One last case, rare and temporary. If your subscription cannot be cancelled at the moment you delete your account (an outage at Link, for instance), we keep only its subscription number held there, and nothing else: not your name, not your address. We use it to retry until the charging really stops, and it is erased as soon as that is done. Without it, your account would be deleted and the charging would carry on.
Your rights
- Access, obtain the list of information we hold about you.
- Correction, have inaccurate information corrected.
- Deletion, have your account and your information deleted.
- Portability, receive your information in a common computer format.
- Withdrawal of consent, at any time, going forward.
Two of these rights can be exercised directly in the app, on the My account page: taking your information away as a file, and deleting your account. For the others, or if you prefer, write to [email protected]. We answer within 30 days.
Cookies
We use only the cookies the service needs to work: the ones that keep you signed in. No advertising cookies, no third-party analytics cookies.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page is updated. A significant change will be flagged inside the service.
